Learning at Work Day and the new right to request time for training
An important new legal right for employees has recently come into operation in the UK. The Right to Request Time Off for Training allows employees in businesses with 250 or more staff to ask for time to train for accredited and unaccredited training to help them develop skills relevant to their job, workplace or business. From April 2011, this right will be extended to cover employees in all businesses.
As part of Learning at Work Day and in partnership with unionlearn, we will be promoting this new right to businesses and employees, and highlighting how the right can be used positively in your workplace to further support and build a learning culture.
In the lead up to Learning at Work Day you will be able to access:
-The Learning at Work Day downloadable mini-guide to the new right, which will contain all the essential facts, further information, action points and activity ideas to promote the right in your workplace for Learning at Work Day and beyond
- A special theme and downloadable poster that you can use to highlight the new right in your workplace
- A range of articles from people involved in the support and delivery of workplace learning that will explore the benefits and potential of the new right and how it may work in practice
We are also looking for examples of the right in practice, so if your workplace is already working to promote the new right to employees please get in touch with Julia Wright on 020 7766 0013 or jwright@cflearning.org.uk.

Celebrate World Book Day
The 4th March is World Book Day, why not celebrate by by setting up a Book Club?
You can set one up at work, or maybe with a group of friends?
Not every workplace has a staff room, so why not take it in turns to hold meetings in each other's homes? Make it a social occasion, as well as bringing a book everyone could bring a cake?
Book clubs are an excellent way of reading books that you may not normally read or choose. Each person in the group takes a turn at choosing a book for the group to read, then 4-6 weeks later the group gets back together again to discuss the book. The discussion doesn't have to be a great big intellectual discussion, it can simply be about whether you enjoyed the book and why. The best sort of books are the ones that divide the group.
I have been a member of a book club for a few years now and there have been maybe one or two books that everyone liked and even one or two that everyone disliked! Usually the group I am in is divided in it's opinion on the book.
If you're stuck for ideas for books , try your local library? Many libraries run book clubs or the librarians can point you in the direction of some suitable books?
If it's your turn to choose, why not pick your favourite book, it doesn't have to be a newly published book. There are many second hand book sites and again your local library, that's if another member of your book club doesn't beat you to a copy!
